The Importance of Group Therapy in Pornography and Sexual Addiction

Forest Benedict, a pioneer in treating sexual addiction, believes group therapy is the crux of recovery. Sobriety may be achieved alone, but long lasting results that heal the core issues of sex addiction only come through group therapy. Sex addicts avoid group interaction because of the shame in their “diagnosis,” and their fear of intimate relationships and real connection with others. These fears, however, must be confronted because intimacy and connection with others is precisely what is needed for long-term recovery. Benedict suggests three ways in which groups effectively resolve the core issues of the sex addict:

  1. Increased trust in others. Relationships can cause the greatest pain, but also the greatest healing. Groups provide a safe space where trust is rebuilt.
  2. Decreased secrecy and shame. We can reveal our innermost secrets, regrets, fears, and dreams in a safe group environment. Shame and secrecy fuel addiction, and by decreasing both we can effectively stomp out the flames.
  3. Strength in numbers. The purpose of a group is to create a real support system, so that when you triumph, you’ll have the greatest cheerleaders; when you fail, they will help get you back on track; in times of great temptation, they will be your “lifeline.”

Groups allow true, long lasting healing that help replace lust with love. Opening yourself to a group therapy experience is the biggest step you can take on your journey toward recovery.
